REF./O.S./I/MK 26th. May, 1943
Dear Senhor Abreu,
As Chairman of the Appeal Committee of the Duke of Gloucester's Red Cross and St. John Fund, it is my privilege to acknowledge the receipt of a gift of £209.7.6 (the sterling equivalent of Ags. 20,520.00) sent by His Majesty's Vice-Consul in Lobito.
In a covering letter Mr. Williams explained that this very substantial sum was raised by raffling a model Spitfire which you most generously offered for sale on behalf of the Red Cross. His Royal Highness gratefully recognises and appreciates the spirit of sympathy and goodwill which prompted you to sacrifice this valuable and treasured possession to further the cause of the British Red Cross, and he has directed me to convey to you his personal and most cordial thanks for the help which you have thus given to the needs of the sick and wounded, prisoners of war, air raid victims, and all those who have suffered as a result of this present conflict.
I should like, if I may, to take this opportunity of expressing my profound admiration for your extremely generous gesture and to thank you on behalf of the Executive Committee of this Fund and all who will benefit by your generosity.
Yours sincerely,
signed : The Lord Illife
Senhor Mario da Costa Marques de Abreu
c/o His Majesty's Vice-Consul,
British Vice-Consulate,

The above Fund is being raised on behalf of The War Organisation of The British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Registered under the War Charities Act, 1940
